From Négra, the first stop of the Mail Boat which linked Toulouse to Agde in the 19th century, the Canal du Midi enables you to cruise between the splendid medieval city of Carcassonne, one of the largest fortresses in Europe, and Castelnaudary, once the biggest merchant port between Toulouse and the Mediterranean in the heyday of this three centuries-old canal.
Before Montech, a delighful little town which was built as a walled town in the 12th century, you will undoubtedly stop at Toulouse. Built in brick , the "Ville Rose" (Pink City) has an exceptional heritage and a warm ambiance in keeping with its gastronomic reputation. After visiting the Saint Sernin basilica and the Capitole you can enjoy cassoulet, foie gras, confit (preserved meats) and all the exciting dishes which characterise the cuisine of the South West. |
