St Martin sur Oust
At the crossroads of the Britanny canals, Saint Martin sur Oust is the Gateway to the country of Merlin the Wizard and the Fairy Viviane. You pass by the Ile aux Pies (Magpies Island): a splendid setting, conducive to daydreaming. Next La Gacilly with its mossy paths and eel-filled marshes so beautiful in the morning mist. Further on stands the magnificent Josselin castle which reflects its majectic towers in the canal water. The Canal de Nantes à Brest is definitely one of the most beautiful canals. From Saint Martin sur Oust to Nantes, navigation is particulary bucolic, you will follow the Erdre valley trough the Gâvre forest, the secular trees which remind of the ancient Celtic forest of King Arthur. This route dotted with castles and manor houses will lead you to Nantes, the city of Jules Verne, which was the most important Harbour of France in the 18th century.
Inland Britanny, with its lights, its villages of granite and slate, its blue hydrangeas, has always been a source of inspiration for painters.
